LEAP Courses

Pallium’s award-winning Learning Essential Approaches to Palliative Care (LEAP) courses is Canada’s leading suite of courseware on palliative care for health care organizations and professionals. LEAP courses provide health care professionals with the knowledge, attitudes, and skills to help provide palliative care to patients and families facing life-limiting illnesses in a more timely and effective way.

LEAP courses are developed and peer-reviewed by volunteer pan-Canadian teams of subject matter experts who are committed to promoting the palliative care approach.

Pallium worked quickly to launch its first fully virtual LEAP course to provide a flexible option for Partners to be able to continue to offer important training related to palliative and end-of-life care and to support the continuity of their teams’ professional development activities.

Palliative Care Education

Pallium’s suite of LEAP courseware provides practical, inter-professional and evidence-based training in the palliative care approach. LEAP courses are inter-professional and designed for all health care professions—LEAP courses in purple meet the needs of most health care professionals. LEAP courses in red provide the same inter-professional training, targeted to the context of specific care settings or specialties. LEAP courses in orange are targeted for specific professions.

LEAP Online is a facilitated online learning program that consists of interactive, self-learning modules and facilitated webinars. LEAP Online provides an in-depth learning experience on essential skills and competencies of the palliative care approach.

In-person

LEAP Core is an interprofessional course that provides health care professionals with an in-depth learning experience on essential skills and competencies of the palliative care approach. LEAP Core is taught by local experts who are experienced palliative care clinicians and educators.

LEAP Mini is an interprofessional course that provides health care professionals with a condensed, one-day learning experience on the essential skills and competencies of the palliative care approach. LEAP Mini is taught by local experts who are experienced palliative care clinicians and educators.

LEAP Long-Term Care is an interprofessional course that provides health care professionals with an in-depth learning experience on essential skills and competencies of the palliative care approach with course modules and case studies contextualized to the long-term care setting. LEAP Long-Term Care is taught by local experts who are experienced palliative care clinicians and educators.

LEAP Emergency Department is an interprofessional course that provides health care professionals with the essential skills and competencies of the palliative care approach, with course modules and case studies contextualized to the emergency department setting. LEAP Hospital is an interprofessional course that provides health care professionals with the essential skills and competencies of the palliative care approach, with course modules and case studies contextualized to the hospital setting. LEAP Oncology is an interprofessional course that provides health care professionals with the essential skills and competencies of the palliative care approach, with course modules and case studies contextualized to the cancer care setting. LEAP Personal Support Worker is an online, self-learning course that provides personal support workers and care aides with the essential competencies to provide a palliative care approach.

LEAP Paramedic is a blended learning course for paramedics and Emergency Medical Service professionals that teaches the essential practical knowledge, attitudes, and skills to provide a palliative care approach on-site. LEAP Paramedic is taught by local paramedic experts and experienced palliative care practitioners.

LEAP Under/Post-Graduate provides medical, nursing and other health school educators with access to all LEAP course content, tools and resources to use in their undergraduate or post-graduate courses. LEAP Under/Post-Graduate was designed to be responsive to different curricula being taught in medical, nursing and other health schools across Canada. Educators have access to all LEAP modules and can select based on their students’ learning needs.

Pallium, in collaboration with the Canadian Medical Association, is providing free online access to essential education on palliative care for all health care professionals in response to this unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic.

LEAP Heart is an interprofessional course that provides health care professionals with the skills and competencies of the palliative care approach, with course modules and case studies contextualized to cardiology teams working in outpatient clinics, hospitals, and coronary care units.

LEAP Lung is an interprofessional course that provides health care professionals with the skills and competencies of the palliative care approach, with course modules and case studies contextualized to the respirology care setting.
