Palliative care course for health care professionals who provide paediatrics care.

LEAP Paediatric is an interprofessional blended learning course that provides health care professionals with the skills and competencies of the palliative care approach contextualized to the paediatric care setting.

 

Delivery Modes

LEAP Paediatric can be delivered online, in-person, or in a hybrid format.

 

Who is it for?

LEAP Paediatric is ideal for any health care professional (e.g., physician, nurse, pharmacist, social worker, etc.) who provide paediatrics care. It may also be of interest to palliative care professionals seeking more information on working with the paediatric population.

 

Course Features

  • Interprofessional approach.
  • Built by Canadian palliative care experts.
  • 8 interactive, self-learning online modules combined with a facilitated workshop that covers 8 additional modules (delivered in-person or via webinar).
  • Participants will receive a LEAP certificate of completion and an electronic copy of the Pallium Palliative Pocketbook.

 

Accreditation

LEAP Paediatric will be submitted for accreditation to the College of Family Physicians of Canada and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

 

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of LEAP Paediatric, learners should be able to:

  • Identify children who could benefit from a palliative care approach and activate a palliative care approach earlier in the illness trajectory
  • Define the roles of primary care clinicians, palliative care teams (paediatric and adult), hospices, and community-based services, in providing palliative care throughout the trajectory of a child’s illness
  • Understand the key features of the Serious Illness Conversation Guide and explain their rationale
  • Describe the unique considerations of paediatric advanced care planning
  • Recognize the multi-dimensional nature of pain
  • Assess pain effectively for children of different ages and developmental stages
  • Provide anticipatory guidance about what to expect at end of life
  • Identify what constitutes better palliative and end-of-life for children and their families
  • Understand how children understand serious illness, death, and grief
  • Assess and manage common gastrointestinal, respiratory, and neurological symptoms
  • Complete and effective pain assessment for children of different ages and developmental stages
