Pallium Canada and the University of Calgary announced they will collaborate to develop the Canadian Atlas of Palliative Care – Alberta Edition, a powerful tool, versions of which have been adopted around the globe to highlight excellence, identify deficiencies, and help move communities towards more fulsome palliative care.
“With the collaborative partnership between Pallium Canada and the University of Calgary, we will be able to utilize this new research opportunity within a world-class institution for the betterment of palliative care in our communities,” said Pallium Canada CEO Jeffrey B. Moat. “Our focus has always been on developing the new frontier of palliative care and through our partnership we will be able to learn from and recommend new ways for services, teams, and medical institutions to provide higher-quality care.”
The pandemic has heightened the importance of learning from the past to build a more efficient and better servicing palliative care. In this partnership, Pallium Canada will work closely with the Division of Palliative Medicine (DPM) at the University of Calgary to conduct this much-needed research which will incorporate the varying approaches and methods of Alberta, sectored into five different geographical areas.
“Building up palliative care research in Alberta will not only lead change within Alberta, but across Canada. That results in better training, care, and quality of life,” said Dr. Jessica Simon of the Division of Palliative Medicine (DPM) at the University of Calgary. “High quality palliative care preparedness begins with core knowledge, with a lack of it being the cause for the current palliative care approach.”
Pallium Canada’s Palliative Care Atlas will conduct research on Alberta’s current palliative approach, compare these to other jurisdictions, and facilitate change by highlighting successes. In partnership with the University of Calgary and the Joshua Shadd – Pallium Canada Research Hub, Pallium Canada will further seek to innovate by a detailed comparison of different geographic areas within Alberta to provide individualized and detailed research.
