Strengthening clinical judgment in complex care situations

Health care professionals regularly encounter situations where patient needs evolve, information is incomplete, and there is no single clear answer. Applying a palliative care approach in these moments requires more than knowledge alone. It requires sound clinical judgment.

LEAP Core Applied helps bridge the gap between foundational learning and clinical practice. Through interactive clinical simulations, realistic patient cases, and facilitated discussion, learners strengthen their clinical judgment and build confidence navigating complex care situations.

Who is it for?

LEAP Core Applied is designed for any health care professionals who have completed foundational training in the palliative care approach and who are looking to strengthen their clinical judgment and confidence in applying their palliative care knowledge to better care for patients with life-limiting illnesses.

Prerequisites: Participants must have completed a Learning Essential Approaches to Palliative Care (LEAP) course (or equivalent) prior to registering for LEAP Core Applied.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of LEAP Core Applied, learners should be able to:

  • Integrate a palliative approach earlier in evolving care situations, particularly when complexity, decline, or uncertainty increases.
  • Recognize when changes in a patient’s overall condition signal the need to shift how care is guided.
  • Adapt conversations when patients and care partners have differing perspectives or strong emotional responses.
  • Build confidence navigating complex care situations where there is no single clear answer.
  • Communicate clearly about care options when preferences and clinical realities are in tension.
  • Exercise professional judgment within role, policy, and system constraints while supporting patient-centred care.
